- Welcome to SoftWindows 2.0
-
- SoftWindows 2.0 is a complete IBM-compatible PC in software. It allows
- Irix users to run Windows and MS-DOS applications on their workstations as
- if they were running on a PC.
-
- It combines full PC compatibility with fast performance and built-in
- networking, so, for example, users can receive electronic mail,
- read PC-formatted CD-ROMS, and print PC files to a network printer, all
- from their SGI workstation.
-
- SoftWindows 2.0 provides full emulation of the Intel 80486 processor,
- enabling users to exploit the full functionality of current PC software.
-
- Among the features provided by this emulation are:
-
- * The ability to run Windows in enhanced (32-bit) mode
- * Continued support for OLE 2.0
- * Multiple MS-DOS sessions
- * 32-bit memory addressing
- * Support for virtual device drivers
-
- In addition, the 486 processor emulation provides the environment required to
- run future versions of Windows.
-
- Here is some important information about your SoftWindows 2.0
- environment. We will tell you in the paragraphs that follow
- about licensing, using your floppy and CDROM drives from
- SoftWindows, as well as stuff about printing and referencing
- your UNIX files from within SoftWindows.
-
-
- Licensing
-
- If a license has not already been installed, you will see
- an error dialog complaining that SoftWindows cannot find
- the licensing file. Click on the "Continue" button. You will
- then be prompted to enter licensing information in a dialog
- box. In the US, call (508) 682-7600 or (415) 694-7694
- while this dialog is up as you will need information from it
- to get your license. ( in Europe call (+44) (1494) 459426 )
-
-
- Configuration
-
- You are setup by default with the following "Disk"
- drives:
- C: a MS-DOS filesytem contained in the UNIX file
- called $HOME/WIN311-username.hdf
- (username is replace by your login name)
- E: Your UNIX home directory ($HOME)
- F: The CDROM (as seen in /CDROM from UNIX)
- G: /usr/lib/SoftWindows2/windows
- H: Your UNIX home directory (same as E:)
- K: the floppy drive (as seen in /floppy from UNIX)
-
- The E: drive can be changed to another UNIX directory from
- the "Options->Disk Drive->Open Drives..." menu item. Other
- UNIX directories can be mounted from MS-DOS or in your
- autoexec.bat file using the "net use" command.
-
- You should print to PRN or LPT1 under MS-DOS. This will be
- sent to your UNIX default printer as if you had used the
- "lp" command.
-
- Windows is setup to print to a virtual Apple Laserwriter
- postscript printer connected to LPT1. This output will also
- be sent to your UNIX default printer as if you had used the
- "lp" command.
-
- Floppies and CDROMs are ejected by selecting the drive on
- the Indigo Magic desktop and pressing right hand mouse
- button for choices, or by other UNIX commands, not by any
- action within SoftWindows.

- Finding More Answers
-
- There is an online SoftWindows User Guide located in the
- Insight library. This is accessible from the
- "Help->OnLine Books" menu choice in your Toolchest.
-
- The manual is also accessible from the "Help" menu item
- in the SoftWindows Title bar. Once the specific Help
- window is displayed, the entire manual can be seen by
- choosing the "File->Go To Book" menu item.
-
- Instructions on using A: for your floppy device are found
- in the online manual. There are also instructions there
- for directly accessing the CDROM drive instead of letting
- UNIX manage it.
-
- There is now a utility for viewing the mapping between
- UNIX names and MS-DOS names. For details, see the man page
- for "dosname".
-
- The information in this document is also available in
- HTML format. To browse it using Netscape access URL
- "file:/usr/lib/SoftWindows/swin_hints.html".
