  1.                      Welcome to SoftWindows 2.0

  3. SoftWindows 2.0 is a complete IBM-compatible PC in software.  It allows
  4. Irix users to run Windows and MS-DOS applications on their workstations as
  5. if they were running on a PC.
  6.  
  7. It combines full PC compatibility with fast performance and built-in
  8. networking, so, for example, users can receive electronic mail,
  9. read PC-formatted CD-ROMS, and print PC files to a network printer, all
  10. from their SGI workstation.

  12. SoftWindows 2.0 provides full emulation of the Intel 80486 processor,
  13. enabling users to exploit the full functionality of current PC software.

  15. Among the features provided by this emulation are:

  17.   * The ability to run Windows in enhanced (32-bit) mode
  18.   * Continued support for OLE 2.0
  19.   * Multiple MS-DOS sessions
  20.   * 32-bit memory addressing
  21.   * Support for virtual device drivers
  22.  
  23. In addition, the 486 processor emulation provides the environment required to
  24. run future versions of Windows.

  26. Here is some important information about your SoftWindows 2.0    
  27. environment.  We will tell you in the paragraphs that follow
  28. about licensing, using your floppy and CDROM drives from 
  29. SoftWindows,  as well as stuff about printing and referencing 
  30. your UNIX files from within SoftWindows.

  33.                            Licensing
  34.  
  35. If a license has not already been installed, you will see
  36. an error dialog complaining that SoftWindows cannot find
  37. the licensing file. Click on the "Continue" button. You will
  38. then be prompted to enter licensing information in a dialog
  39. box. In the US, call (508) 682-7600 or (415) 694-7694 
  40. while this dialog is up as you will need information from it
  41. to get your license. ( in Europe call (+44) (1494) 459426 )

  44.                         Configuration
  45.  
  46. You are setup by default with the following "Disk"
  47. drives:
  48.         C:   a MS-DOS filesytem contained in the UNIX file
  49.               called $HOME/WIN311-username.hdf
  50.               (username is replace by your login name)
  51.         E:   Your UNIX home directory ($HOME)
  52.         F:   The CDROM (as seen in /CDROM from UNIX)
  53.         G:   /usr/lib/SoftWindows2/windows
  54.         H:   Your UNIX home directory (same as E:)
  55.         K:   the floppy drive (as seen in /floppy from UNIX)

  57. The E: drive can be changed to another UNIX directory from
  58. the "Options->Disk Drive->Open Drives..." menu item.  Other
  59. UNIX directories can be mounted from MS-DOS or in your
  60. autoexec.bat file using the "net use" command.

  62. You should print to PRN or LPT1 under MS-DOS. This will be
  63. sent to your UNIX default printer as if you had used the
  64. "lp" command.

  66. Windows is setup to print to a virtual Apple Laserwriter
  67. postscript printer connected to LPT1. This output will also 
  68. be sent to your UNIX default printer as if you had used the
  69. "lp" command.

  71. Floppies and CDROMs are ejected by selecting the drive on
  72. the Indigo Magic desktop and pressing right hand mouse
  73. button for choices, or by other UNIX commands, not by any
  74. action within SoftWindows.

  80. Insight library. This is accessible from the 
  81. "Help->OnLine Books" menu choice in your Toolchest.

  84. in the SoftWindows Title bar. Once the specific Help
  85. window is displayed, the entire manual can be seen by
  86. choosing the "File->Go To Book" menu item.
